How to Register Your Business in Colorado

Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, you’ll need to register your business with the state of Colorado. Fortunately, registering with the state is easy.

Register your business in Colorado in three easy steps:

  1. First, you need to make sure you have a registered agent in Colorado. You can hire someone to act as your registered agent. Learn more about registered agents here.
  2. You can register with both the Colorado Department of Revenue and the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment online through MyBizColorado. Once you’ve registered online, you’ll get an instant confirmation. You’ll also get a letter in the mail later.
  3. After you’ve registered through MyBizColorado, you can set up your account with the Department of Revenue to manage your withholding responsibilities.

If you have employees in Denver, Aurora, Sheridan, Glendale, or Greenwood Village, you may be liable for additional local taxes as well.

It’s important to remember that you are responsible for paying an unemployment tax once you’ve paid $1500 in wages in a single calendar quarter, or employed someone for a portion of a day in 20 weeks in a calendar year.

Once you’re registered with MyBizColorado, you can manage your licenses, sales tax, wage withholding, and unemployment insurance accounts online.
