Just a short commute from New York City and home to some very formidable cities of its own, including Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut is chock-a-block full of whip-smart people. So, chances are good you will find your next employee in The Constitution State. Fortunately, in this era of remote work, collaborating across state lines is easy, no matter where your business is based.
Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, you’ll need to register your business with the state of Connecticut. Fortunately, registering with the state is easy.
Register your business in Connecticut in two easy steps:
- First, you’ll need to register your business with the Department of Revenue. You can do this online. Just select “Register a New Business Online” on the Department of Revenue website.
- Next, you’ll need to register with the Connecticut Department of Labor to get your unemployment tax account. From the Department of Labor website, click “Take me to Internet Employer Registration System.” You can find detailed registration instructions from the Department of Labor here.
You’ll receive your tax registration number from the Department of Revenue within 10 days of registering online. You should receive your unemployment account number immediately, followed by a letter in the mail a week later.
Remember, you are responsible for paying an unemployment tax once you’ve paid $1500 in wages in a single calendar quarter, or employed someone for a portion of a day in 20 weeks in a calendar year.
Once you’re registered with the Department of Revenue and the Department of Labor, you’ll be able to take care of your unemployment and wage withholding responsibilities online. The Department of Revenue has detailed online instructions for managing your ongoing withholding responsibilities.
