It’s no wonder Florida is one of the fastest growing states in the country. And it’s not just retirees who want to live in The Sunshine State, so there’s a good chance your next employee will be a Floridian.
Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, if you operate a business with one or more employees in the state of Florida, you’ll need to register your company with the state. Fortunately, no matter what kind of business you are operating, registering with the state of Florida is fairly simple.
Register your business in Florida in two easy steps:
- First, you’ll need to create an account with the Florida Department of Revenue.
- Once you’ve created a username and password, you can fill out the Florida Business Tax Application. You can select “new registration” as your reason for applying.
The Florida Department of Revenue will issue you an account in 3-5 days by mail.
Florida has no state income tax, so you have no withholding obligations as an employer in the state of Florida. You do have unemployment insurance tax obligations, though. If you employed one or more people for a day (or portion of a day) during any 20 weeks in a calendar year, or if you paid $1,500 or more in wages a calendar year, then you are liable for unemployment taxes. That being said, only the first $7,000 of wages paid to each employee by their employer in a calendar year is taxable. And if you have stable employment records, you could receive reduced tax rates after a qualifying period.
Once your account is up and running, you can pay unemployment insurance taxes (or as it’s known in Florida, reemployment insurance), and report new employees online. You can learn more about Florida’s reemployment insurance tax at the tax help center.
