Great things come from Georgia. For example, Coca Cola was invented in Atlanta in 1886. And then, of course, are Georgia’s famous peaches, delicious in cobbler on ice cream, or in a peach vodka cocktail on the back porch. And with more and more people moving to Georgia every year to enjoy the beautiful weather, chances are good that your next employee might come from Georgia, too.
Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, if you operate a business with one or more employees in the state of Georgia, you’ll need to register your company with the state. Fortunately, no matter what kind of business you are operating, registering with the state of Georgia is fairly simple.
Register your business in Georgia in two easy steps:
- First, you’ll need to register online with the Georgia Department of Revenue. Under the registration menu. click “Register a New Georgia Business” and complete the online application. You’ll receive a confirmation email with your Georgia Tax identification Number and login information right away.
- Next, you’ll need to register online with the Georgia Department of Labor. You should receive your account number immediately after completing the application.

Keep in mind that you are responsible for paying an unemployment tax once you’ve paid $1500 in wages in a single calendar quarter, or employed someone for a portion of a day in 20 weeks in a calendar year.
Once you’re registered with the Department of Revenue and the Department of Labor, you can file quarterly tax and wage reports and submit tax payments online.
