Mississippi is the birthplace of some of America’s most cherished icons—Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey, Sam Cooke, and Britney Spears to name just a few. Then, of course, there is the Mississippi literary tradition, from Faulkner to Grisham, not to mention the state’s delicious tamales with gravy, famous bluegrass music, and plenitude of historical sites.  So, chances are, if your next employee is a Mississippian, they won’t want to leave. Fortunately, in this era of remote work, collaborating across state lines is easy.

Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, you’ll need to register your company with the state of Mississippi.

Register your business in Mississippi in three easy steps:

  1. First, you’ll need to register your business with the Mississippi Secretary of State.
  2. Next, you’ll need to register with the Department of Revenue via Mississippi’s Taxpayer Access Point. The registration application is available online.
  3. Finally, you’ll need to register with the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. That application is also available online.

You should receive your account numbers from both the Department of Revenue and the Department of Employment Security immediately after registering online.

Once you’ve received your account numbers, you’ll be able to register new employees, file wage reports, and submit unemployment taxes online. Remember, in general, you are responsible for paying an unemployment tax once you’ve paid $1500 in wages in a single calendar quarter, or employed someone for a portion of a day in 20 different weeks in a calendar year.

If you need additional support, the Mississippi Department of Employment Security has a helpful FAQ page.
