A Guide to Business Registration in the Empire State

From Albany to Syracuse, SoHo to Harlem, New York is a study in contrasts. You can take a meeting at One World Trade Center in the morning and be hiking in the Hudson Valley by noon. Manhattan has always been the center of gravity for the Empire State, but, given the breathtaking natural beauty and unbeatable cultural opportunities state-wide, chances are if your next employee is a New Yorker, they won’t want to leave. Fortunately, in this era of remote work, collaborating across state lines is easy.

Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, you’ll need to register your company with the state of New York.  

Register your business in New York in three easy steps:

  1. First, you’ll need to create your ny.gov account.
  2. Once you’ve created your ny.gov account, you can register with the New York Department of Labor.
  3. Next, you’ll need to create a business account with the New York Department of Taxation and Finance.

You should receive your unemployment account number within five days of applying. Once you’ve received your account number, you’ll be able to register new employees, file wage reports, and submit unemployment taxes online. Remember, in New York, employers are generally liable for unemployment taxes on the first day of the calendar quarter in which they pay $300 in wages.

Depending on where your employee lives, you may also be liable for the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax. Be sure to check with the Department of Taxation and Finance to see what your responsibilities are.
